I was really honored and excited to get invited to participate in an exhibition inspired by the Romance Languages of Latin America, especially because I was born and raised in Venezuela, where I lived until I was 18 years old. It is very natural for me to draw inspiration from the endless beauty of my native language.

Although I’m not really used to explaining too much what my narrative paintings are about, I think in this case it is appropriate to give a little more insight. There is a song titled Hasta la Raíz [To the Root] by Mexican singer/songwriter Natalia Lafourcade that I have always felt a connection with and that touches me to the core. It is infused with raw folkloric Latin American rhythms, and it is about the importance of not forgetting your origins, where you come from and all those things that give you strength and build you as a human being.

The painting I made for “Chévere,” which shares the song’s title, is a nostalgic yet hopeful visual metaphor about my origins, my identity, where I’ve been and where I want to be, the ones I love, and all those memories and emotions I carry underneath my skin, embedded within me, and deep to my roots. It is fundamentally about moving forward without leaving my essence behind.

Here you can take a closer look at the painting surface.

Featured in an article on The Huffington Post thoughtfully and beautifully written by artist and novelist Daniel Maidman.

“A woman stands in front of a moody sky upon a field of twisted branches. There is something gorgeously dramatic about this, full of portent - it’s a cliffhanger of a painting.” Daniel Maidman
